CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 27, 2014 … The Pitchin’ for Wishes Cornhole Tourney offers fun for the whole family at Freedom Park on Sept. 27. If you’re interested in competing, register by Sept. 19 – the entry fee for a two-person team is $60 and goes directly to Make-A-Wish® Central and Western North Carolina.

Hosted by general contractor Andrew Roby and Harris Teeter, Inc., Pitchin’ for Wishes will also feature children’s activities such as a bounce house, face painters and a balloon artist. Sir Purr from the Panthers, Homer from the Charlotte Knights, Charlotte Hounds’ Blue and Chubby Checker from the Checkers will all make a special appearance.

“In its seventh year, our cornhole tournament is always a fun, family-friendly afternoon at the park. And, it’s meaningful knowing that we’re making children’s wishes come true,” said Trent Haston, president and chief executive officer of Roby Family of Companies.

Pitchin’ for Wishes holds the Guinness World Record for largest cornhole tournament. The $60 entry fee includes a free T-shirt and Thorlos socks for each participant. The first-place team wins $1,000, and the second-place team wins $500. Register online by Sept. 19 at pitchinforwishes2014.kintera.org.

Organized by Andrew Roby, the event is in its seventh year and has raised more than $500,000 for various charities in previous years. Event sponsors include DryPro Basement Systems, Pinnacle Roofing, Queen City Lumber, United Healthcare and many others.

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy at a time when they need it most. For many, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illness. The average cost to grant a child’s wish through Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina is $6,000.

Proceeds from the cornhole tournament help to grant wishes of local children like 10-year-old Arriana, a strong, smart girl with a magnificent smile. While going through a tough course of chemotherapy and treatments for her large cell lymphoma, this brave little girl kept a positive attitude and focused on living each day to the fullest. When she found out she could pick her very own wish, she knew she wanted to get away and be surrounded by turquoise water and waterslides.

Arriana and her family took a Royal Caribbean cruise – this much-needed family vacation allowed her to enjoy a respite from the hospital, while playing and enjoying the water surrounding her. The experience helped Arriana believe that wishes do come true.

Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina will grant 260 wishes this year, but there are more than 240 qualified children waiting for their wishes. The organization relies solely on fundraising support from the local community.

Pitchin’ for Wishes is from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., rain or shine. For more information, visit pitchinforwishes2014.kintera.org.
