Pitchin' for Wishes Cornhole Tournament Returns in September

Date

June 18, 2018

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Pitchin’ for Wishes Cornhole Tournament benefiting Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina returns to Freedom Park Sept. 15. Andrew Roby and Harris Teeter are celebrating the 11th annual cornhole tournament that has raised more than $1.4 million for local charities and set records as the largest cornhole tournament in the world.

“It is just so rewarding to be involved in something that benefits so many deserving people in our community,” said Trent Haston, president and CEO of the Roby Family of Companies. “We don’t accomplish our fundraising goals alone, however. As our tournament continues to grow, we welcome new cornhole competitors, event volunteers, donations from the community and additional sponsors.”

Organizers have set a fundraising goal of $225,000 for this year’s event, which will enable Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina to grant the wishes of 37 children with critical illnesses in our local community. Harris Teeter is co-hosting the event as they have done every year since 2013. Its contribution of $75,000 will cover the cost of more than 12 wishes.

Sponsors are welcome to join the effort through Friday, Aug. 10. Already, Dry Pro Foundation & Crawlspace Specialists, Enterprise Fleet Management, Pinnacle Roofing & Exteriors, Inc. and Preferred Floor & Tile Co., have signed on as platinum sponsors.

The family-friendly tournament features an NCAA bracket-style cornhole competition, food, music, mascots from Charlotte’s professional sports teams, bouncy houses and children’s play zone.

If you’re interested in playing cornhole, the registration fee for a two-person team is $60. The first-place team wins $1,000, the second-place team wins $500, and every participant receives a t-shirt. The deadline to register a team is Sept. 7. If you prefer to watch, Pitchin’ for Wishes is free for spectators and offers activities for all ages.

Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina awarded Andrew Roby the inaugural Dale Jr. Indomitable Spirit Award in 2017. It honors an outstanding partner that embodies the heart of the organization's desire to share the power of a wish -- through persistence, compassion, integrity and dedication -- and make a lasting impact on the Make-A-Wish® community. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller started The Dale Jr. Foundation (TDJF) with the primary mission of making the lives of children better. To honor this commitment, the Central and Western North Carolina chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation named the award after the champion racing driver in 2016.

Make-A-Wish creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. For many, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illness. Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina will grant the wishes of 380 children this year, however, there are an additional 200 children still waiting for their wishes to be granted. The average cost to grant a child’s wish through Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina is $6,000. Since its inception in 1985, Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina has granted more than 4,300 wishes and has never turned down an eligible wish. The organization relies solely on fundraising support from the local community.
