Wish kid Lucas has always craved adventure, loved the water, and can be described by his family as an “Adrenaline junkie.” Lucas refuses to let anything limit himself, even his neurological condition that has caused him to be bound to a wheelchair and unable to communicate verbally. He loves the concept of motion – whether it’s flying in airplanes, riding roller coasters, knee-boarding or surfing. To Lucas, there is nothing more exhilarating than to feel the wind in your face. “Lucas and his father love to go to the beach, but we have been unable to take him anywhere with good surfing waves,” says Lucas’ mother. When Lucas’ wish was approved, he couldn’t wait for the chance to cross “go adaptive surfing in Hawaii” off of his bucket list.
Lucas and his family were finally able to catch the perfect wave in Turtle Bay, Hawaii with AccessSurf. Their goal is to empower people with disabilities by providing adaptive surfing instruction and therapeutic educational programs on water recreation on some of the best surfing waves in the world. They enrich the lives of others by assisting families to access the beach and ocean in a barrier free environment. No wave proved to be too big for Lucas and he loved the wind in his face as he surfed the gigantic waves of Turtle Bay.
His wish reminded Lucas and his family that being in a wheelchair doesn’t mean a life full of limitations. Feeling the wind in his hair and smelling the salt water was an absolute dream come true for both Lucas and his entire family. The trip left the family with everlasting memories and photos, while strengthening the bond they all share. After the wish, Lucas’ mother said, “Lucas’ wish gave us the rejuvenation we needed to face another school year filled with doctors’ appointments and challenging therapies. It gave us the break we so desperately needed, memories we’ll never lose, smiles, a week full of family and unforgettable moments of joy.”
