After retiring in January 2014 as chief ranger of the Blue Ridge Parkway — one of the busiest units of the Park Service — Stinnett signed up for the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Trailblaze Challenge in October. The epic, one-day, 28.3-mile hike took Stinnett 10 hours to complete.

Walasia Vinson has been cancer-free for two years, but she's not forgotten what the treatments were like or the people who supported her.

Vinson was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the spring of 2012. She had chemotherapy and radiation and was declared cancer-free Sept. 19, 2012, her grandmother's birthday.
