WHO: Described by her pageant organizer as “a complete sweetheart,” wish kid Jessa is unlike many 5-year-old girls. She was born with a nervous system disorder that requires her to use a wheelchair in order to get around. She was adopted into a Charlotte, North Carolina family with three other adopted children – one sister and two brothers – all of which have varied special needs. Jessa’s family embraces what makes each of them different, and Jessa’s mom Jacqueline shares, “We got Jessa involved in pageants to build her confidence and change the face of beauty and people’s perceptions.”
Pageants are now one of Jessa’s favorite things to do, participating in more than 25 to date. When she started, she was nonverbal and needed to work with a speech therapist. Since becoming a part of the pageant world, she has started opening up and began talking and feeling comfortable expressing herself. The confidence it’s built and her love of the glitz and glamour inspired her to wish…to be Queen of the Queen City! When talking about her vision for the wish, she wants to have an actual coronation with her royal subjects in yellow attire and a ballroom packed with all eyes on her. On October 5, 2018, that is what Make-A-Wish and The Ritz-Carlton are planning to do with the organization’s community of supporters.

Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. We seek to bring every eligible child's wish to life because a wish is an integral part of a child's treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight their illness. Make-A-Wish® Central and Western North Carolina serves 51 counties in North Carolina from Burlington (Alamance County) to the west. The chapter has granted more than 4,720 wishes since its inception in 1985, and will grant 385 in 2018 alone. For more information, visit nc.wish.org or follow on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
