Twelve-year-old Walasia is a beautiful girl with a bright and welcoming smile. Despite the fact that she was diagnosed with a germ cell brain tumor, she continues to be known for being extremely bright, friendly full of love. When trying to decide her one true wish Walasia couldn’t choose between going on a cruise with her entire family and pursuing her love of her favorite football player, Cam Newton. With little convincing, she decided she couldn’t resist spending much needed time away with her family on a huge boat!
A few days before Walasia’s wish experience began she was invited to Macy’s for a makeover and mini shopping spree to get ready for her big trip. Her afternoon started with a makeover at the Clinique counter before she started her mini-shopping spree (with a personal shopper). The afternoon concluded with her trying on her new clothes in a personalized dressing room, filled with her favorite candies and snacks. A new bathing suit and warm weather outfits were just what she needed to start her trip off right!
In December 2013, Walasia and her parents flew to Florida to embark on their luxurious cruise ship and enjoy an entire week together bathing in the sun. Walasia’s goal for this trip was to spend quality time together with her family, which she feels, was definitely accomplished. The family did not have to worry about appointments, unexpected hospital visits or treatments, they could just relax and know that for the entire week it wasn’t about a condition that she had, it was about celebrating her life. Walasia thoroughly enjoyed exploring both the ship and the ports of call. She and her family also received VIP service by the staff and guests of the ship.
September of this year (on her grandmother’s birthday) Walasia will be two years cancer-free! When asked how her wish has changed her life, Walasia states, “It affects me now because it gave me and my family precious memories that we can remember forever. My life has been awesome since my wish.”
Walasia is such a wonderful ambassador for Make-A-Wish that she was chosen to be the Macy’s “Believe Day” ambassador to represent the Central and Western North Carolina chapter. A national partnership between Macy’s and Make-A-Wish was designed to encourage children of all ages to believe during the holidays. Children are asked to write a letter to Santa and then drop them off at Santa’s official North Pole mailbox located at local Macy’s stores between November and December 24. Every letter sent to Santa resulted in a $1 donation to Make-A-Wish, up to $1 million nationally. During Walasia’s trip to Macy’s she dropped off her own set of letters gathered by kids at her school to help spread the power of a wish to other deserving children.
