Miranda's wish story as told by her father, Danny:
"My sixteen-year-old daughter Miranda was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer in September 2011. While in treatment, she spent hours and hours of her time sifting through countless magazines and flipping through television shows all about fashion and designers. Miranda became so captivated with this world, she started to consider a career in the fashion industry. It came as no surprise to her mother or I when she determined her wish to go to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City.
Miranda’s wish was a life-changing experience for everyone involved. Being able to bring her best friend since the first grade, Lindsey, who has been an incredible support system through Miranda’s cancer journey, made the experience even more special. Her mom and I were in awe at the attention to detail and the lengths at which Make-A-Wish went to make this an unforgettable wish. She was granted exclusive backstage access where she was able to meet countless models, designers and celebrities. We were overwhelmed by their kindness as each treated her like a long-lost friend.
The timing of her wish could not have come at a better moment for Miranda and for us. Two weeks following her wish, our family had to temporarily relocate to Baltimore so she could undergo a bone marrow transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The wish experience re-energized Miranda and gave her the mindset to fight and conquer her cancer diagnosis. More importantly, it brought hope back into all of our lives, hope for a bright and healthy future.
It’s difficult to find the words to truly describe the experience, for me it was almost as if the wish found a way to cure Miranda’s cancer for a week. That week gave our family a much needed reprieve and allowed us to focus on our beloved daughter and have the simple pleasure of living for the moment.”
